AFCON 2023: Nigeria, South Africa have the best defence so far – CAF TSG

The Technical Study Group, TSG of the Confederation of African Football, CAF said the Super Eagles have the best back line so far in the AFCON.

Leader of the group, Mr. Raul gave this information while reeling out the statistics of matches played so far at the ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

Mr. Raul disclosed that the Super Eagles, has conceded only one goal since the tournament started. He also revealed that the next team that has the best defence is Nigeria’s next opponent in the semi final of AFCON, South Africa.

He however disclosed that 103 goals have so far been scored from the group stage to the quarter final stage. He claimed that the teams are more organized in this year’s AFCON. His words, “They are not scoring many goals because the defense lines are more disciplined. The teams are more compact.”

TSG further revealed that only five goals have thus far been scored in counter attacks which are not comparable to past AFCON in Cameroon two years ago. It attributed it to teams playing defensive strategy or sit back.

The Group however commended CAF for a good job. It says many upsets were experienced because of the good organisation. “We have been experiencing upsets because the gap between the big and small teams are not more there. It is gradually being reduced.

“We have more quality coaches now and they read the game very well. The organization of the team is better. They are more consistent in their game plans which were missing in the past. There is more awareness on the part of the players. This is the AFCON of surprises. African football is developing,” he concluded.
