Samuel Osinachi who resides in the United States of America, USA, came back home and stayed in Abuja, only to be robbed in the night on his way home from a friend’s house but unfortunately for him, the Circuit Camera Television, CCTV couldn’t capture anything.
After Osinachi reported the case, he was expecting officers of the law enforcement agency to play back the CCTV and probably identify the culprits and apprehend the following day but he was shocked to hear that there is no footage because the cameras were not working.
That is the situation in Nigeria not only the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, the seat of power. Many crimes have taken place but untraceable and some of the criminals escape uncaptured especially where there are no security presence.
During a visit to Turkey and Angola, our correspondent noticed the presence of policemen on every streets especially in Antalya, Istanbul and Luanda respectively.
Good enough, nowadays, police personnel and their vehicles are being noticed on every parts of Abuja and its environment, especially the neighbouring State, Nasarawa.
A passerby, who simply gave his name as Daniel Onoriode claimed that police and the military are always seen everywhere nowadays, whenever the President is traveling or making use of the road or when there is a perceived protest that might lead to violence.
Meanwhile, the rate at which insecurity is increasing at an alarming rate is disturbing and many crime experts believe some things are responsible and needed to be addressed before they snowballed into bigger crisis.
During the last administration of Muhammadu Buhari, the situation was so bad that everything including foodstuffs shot up in the market because people were unable to go to farms, and for those who succeeded in doing that, they were unable to harvest their crops and probably take them to nearby markets.
However, many experts believe that there are some factors responsible for insecurity in the country that need urgent attentions. Below are some of them:
1. Paying serious attention to the youth
It is said in the local parlance that the youths are leaders of tomorrow. This is one of the reasons why many countries especially the developed ones don’t tamper with what makes their youth happy.
They ensure that they make provisions for their needs. They also ensure that foods and fruits are available and affordable. They ensure the provision of accommodation and vehicles for those in need, at affordable prices or make mortgage easy for them to acquire those things. For those who are unemployed, they provide them with stipends to take care of themselves. They make schooling easy through their scholarship system.
This is why where these facilities are, their youths hardly threaten brimstone and fire or take to the streets. They make the transportation system very easy for one to move around, the stipend given is enough for them to feed and go to match venues to relax, amongst others.
In Nigeria, the youths are at the mercy of the older generations. The slogan now in the mouths of many of them is, “The old people are the future/leaders of tomorrow,” if what has transpired in the last two and half decades are anything to go by. The poor especially the youths have not had opportunity to breathe well while some have taken their lives by diving into the lagoons and other means. Today, it is the “japa” syndrome that is reigning.
The advantage of paying attention to the youth is that they are the ones to carry the burden of this country in future. And if they are not empowered or encouraged, many of them will leave for greener pastures.
Investigations have shown that most of the countries that are doing well today in various fields especially sports, science, economy and health, are being dominated or helped by Nigerians, who ordinarily would have helped their country to grow.
This is the reason why government needs to develop a deliberate policy to address the issues affecting the country and the youth and one of them is education.
