There is no other way to describe the happenings in Italian football in the last two weeks but season of pains and disappointment.
Before now, the Italian national team failed to qualify for the last world cup. It was not only shocking but painful for the Italian fans as their darling team was missing in one of the greatest football fiesta which they won in 2006.
Shortly after that episode, they started a rebuilding process that saw them go unbeaten in the European qualifiers eventthough they were unable to lift the trophy.
In this year’s European competitions, they did very well with three of their club sides in the finals of three major european competitions – UEFA champions league, Europa and European Conference league.
Firstly, Roma against all odds got to the final of the Europa League. Many bookmakers gave it to Roma because of their coach who is a serie winner but some believe that Sevilla will lift it because of their dominance in the competition.
Sevilla, despite finishing below 10th position, in La Liga (Spain), they defeated the Italian side, Roma by 1-0 to lift the trophy for the fourth time.
As if that was a fluke, another Italian clubside, Fiorentina confronted an English side, West Ham coached by David Moyes. Just like their counterparts in Serie A, Fiorentina also lost to West Ham by 1-0 in the European Conference League.
In the UEFA champions league, although bookmakers already gave it to Manchester City because of their exploits in England couple with their consistency in europe but some also believe that Inter Milan who surprisingly got to the final might also pull a surprise.
Also, considering that they have more experience in europe than Manchester City and believing that they can rescue the other Italian clubsides – Roma and Fiorentina that failed to win, many thought they will correct the wrong and salvage the situation for Italian tootball but unfortunately, they also lost by 1-0.
Lastly, last night, another Italian team in the just-concluded U20 FIFA World Cup, the junior Azurris also lost by 1-0 to Uruguay in the final.
There is no other way to describe the present situation in Italian football but a disappointing and frustrating season and hope that they will go back to the drawing board and correct things that might be missing in their football.
