A new champion will definitely emerge at the ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON tagged Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
This is because against all odds, the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire defeated defending champion, Senegal in a penalty shoot out by 8-7 after playing 1-1 in regulation time.
With the victory, Senegal goes home while Cote d’Ivoire qualified for the quarter-final to face Cape Verde in the quarter-final.
Recalled that Cote d’Ivoire managed to qualify for the round of 16, as one of the best losers with three points while Senegal on the other hand got to the round of 16 as leader of their group with nine points, the only team with that record.
It was a similar thing that happened to the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the AFCON 2022 in Cameroon after topping their group, they were dumped out of the tournament by Tunisia that qualified as one of the best losers.
