The Nigeria Women Football League Premiership heads into matchday 6 this midweek and Rivers Angels will be in a crucial encounter with group leaders, Delta Queens inside the mainbowl of the University of Port Harcourt Sports Complex.
The Jewel of Rivers were held to a goalless draw by Heartland Queens in Owerri last week and are hoping to halt the 100% winning run of the Okowa Babes on Wednesday.
Head Coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon says the encounter will be interesting and fierce but he is confident his team will emerge with all three points after 90 minutes.
“We’ve really had it tough this season, this should probably be the most difficult start for us but we are not relenting in any way. Delta Queens have been impeccable this season but we are not letting their present form discourage us.
“Rivers Angels has already set a standard for itself and we are going to ensure we maintain that by giving it our all against Delta Queens and picking the maximum points needed.
“The objective is to qualify for this year’s Super 6, reclaim the league title and go back to the continent. I know it won’t be easy but with hard work and determination, we will achieve this,” he said.
Also speaking ahead of Wednesday’s game is Rivers Angels goalkeeper, Charlotte Adjei who is optimistic her side will claim victory over Delta Queens regardless of the opponents’ good form.
“We play Delta Queens tomorrow and they are currently topping the table but it doesn’t mean that they will be there at the end of the season.
“We don’t care if they are unbeaten or not, all we are after is beating them here in Port Harcourt. We are determined to end their record and that’s the only thing on our mind at the moment,” began the Ghanaian shot-stopper.
Adjei also enjoins her teammates, especially the attackers to endeavour to make their chances count on Wednesday.
“Our attackers just need to make good use of all the opportunities we get in tomorrow’s game. If we are able to convert our chances tomorrow, then we should be able to get the maximum points,” she added.
Both teams were in the same group last season and Rivers Angels played a goalless draw with Delta Queens in Asaba in their opening game and won 1-0 in the second round at the Uniport Sports Complex, venue of Wednesday’s game.
