The President of Living Faith Church Worldwide also known as Winners Chapel International, Bishop David Oyedepo said Universities are supposed to be problem-solving centres where public, private, industry, commerce are supposed to be consulting for their issues not big grammar and philosophy centres.
He stated this during a symposium organised by Covenant University Alumni Association in his honour to mark his 70th birthday celebration on Tuesday at the University Auditorium, Ota, Ogun State.
His words, “Universities are supposed to be problem-solving centres where public, private, industry, commerce are supposed to be consulting for their issues not big grammar and philosophy centres. That is why I believe universities are positioned to provide intellectual solutions to issues of concern to government, commerce and industry.
He further said importing contents from other countries into Nigeria’s education system won’t help the country.
“We have the potential; we have to utilize them without borrowing principles that won’t work. Imported content in our education system can’t help us. It won’t help, it hasn’t helped. We were trained to be workers not leaders. What then is the value of formal education and chains of degree that proffers no solution,” he said.
Oyedepo also called for repackaging of the country’s educational systems. “Knowledge is key to have our problems solved. Problems are ordained to be solved by knowledge. We must have to review the content of our training to address the needs of the hour in this part of the world. We have a very rich history of problem solving as gallantly displayed by our forefathers.
“Our forefathers proffered solutions to their problems including finding crops they planted. I still want to believe that providing indigenous solutions is the only way to go. All the animals in the wild provided their own solutions where they are found, they don’t need to get visa to travel yet their kingdom keeps expanding, they solve their health problems by themselves but we, humans, every small headache, we rush abroad.
Things must change and we must be the one to effect the change,” he noted.
