When Ylane Batix made his debut for Cameroon at the 2021 ITTF Africa Championships in Yaoundé, many table tennis enthusiasts doubted whether his style of play could thrive on the continent. But four years later, the young Cameroonian is proving the skeptics wrong and steadily carving out his place among Africa’s elite.
Beyond his appearances in continental tournaments, Batix has expanded his reach by competing in the WTT Series, showcasing his potential on bigger stages. While he previously struggled to progress beyond the round of 32 at the ITTF Africa Championships, his breakthrough came in 2025 when he reached the semifinals of the ITTF Africa Cup, earning a spot at the ITTF World Cup in China and marking his international debut.
Now 19, Batix has gained valuable experience and confidence, and his performance at the 2025 ITTF Africa Championships in Tunis confirmed his rising status. Finishing among the top four in the Men’s Singles, he defied expectations and proved he can compete with the continent’s best.
Realistic about the road ahead, Batix remains focused on his long-term goal. “My dream is to become African champion, and I think I’m getting closer. It hasn’t been an easy journey, especially with players like Quadri Aruna, Omar Assar, Youssef Abdelaziz, and others still dominating. But I give myself two years, I believe I’ll be at the top,” he said.
For now, his immediate target is qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, having narrowly missed out in 2024.
“Qualifying for the Olympics has always been my dream. I know it will take more hard work, and I’m ready to double my efforts. I feel I’m maturing in the game, and the many competitions I’ve played have helped build my confidence and mental strength,” he added.
To reach the top four in Tunis, Batix delivered standout performances, eliminating former African Games champion Olajide Omotayo of Nigeria and former African Youth champion Mahmoud Helmy of Egypt.
His impressive run was eventually halted in the semifinals by the reigning champion, Omar Assar of Egypt.
