The English Premier League, EPL last Sunday came to an end with the trio of Leceister City, Leeds and Southampton relegated to the championship.
While Southampton got relegated long before the league came to an end with about four matches remaining, the duo of Leceister and Leeds went down on the last day.
Southampton played very well right from the beginning of the league but went down due to carelessness on the parts of the coaches and management. Even in their last match after being relegated, they gave Liverpool a run for their money drawing the match by 4-4.
They missed it when they sacked their German coach, Ralph Hassenhutt and to make matter worst, they were playing carelessness as if there was nothing at stake. Most times they build up their games from the goalkeeper, even if they are under pressure and being pressed by opponents and suppose to clear the ball, they will still continue making passes until they conceed a goal and that contributed mostly to some of the matches they lost last season.
As for Leeds, they also sacked the coach that brought them from championship, Marcelo Bielsa and the sacking of Jesse March is another wrong decision taken at the wrong time.
Even if they want to sack him, it was supposed to have been done earlier and to make matter worse, they sold some of their best players – Ralphinha to Barcelona, Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City amongst others and the players they brought in did not measure up hence they struggled throughout the season.
Lastly is Leceister City, a former champion, that supposed to know better but they carelessness went down and left it too late before fighting back.
When they supposed to sack Brendan Rodgers, they kept him and sacked him when it was too late. Even before then, some of their players retired while some left and their replacements did not commensurate with what they had before.
For instance, the sale of Ngolo Kante left a big vacuum that they have not filled, the same with their former goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel. The retirement of Wes Morgan, Robert Huth, and the ageing of Jamie Vardy, just to mention a few also was a contributing factor. Not also forgetting the sale of Harry Maguire, Demarai Gray and Jeffrey Schlupp, amongst others.
Leceister players were also playing as if there was nothing at stake and they were so wasteful in front of goal this season. The players they brought in did not also help matters as they were too casual only to start playing well towards the end of the season.
Unlike Leceister, Everton, another relegation candidate did everything humanly possible even before their last game to ensure that they escape relegation and because their Maker saw their efforts, He crowned it with a place in the EPL. This is the second time in a roll that Evertoners have escaped relegation courtesy of the sole effort of their goalkeeper, who also happened to be England first choice, Jordan Pickford.
Well, it is a pity that the duo of Super Eagles players, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were affected, it is only advisable that they move to a premiership teams next season and for Alex Iwobi, a big congratulations to him.
